Sri Lanka, the 2014 champions of the T20 World Cup, have faced challenging prospects in the 2024 tournament, grappling with two narrow defeats that jeopardize their advancement beyond the group stage. Despite high hopes for a strong start, losses to South Africa and Bangladesh have left their qualification hanging by a thread. The team’s bowling has shown precision, but their batting struggles have been a significant setback, not only for Sri Lanka but for many other teams in the competition.

The tournament has highlighted the unpredictability of the pitches, which Sri Lanka’s fast bowling coach Aqib Javed pointed out early on. In their fourth match, Sri Lanka managed only 77 runs, a reflection of the challenging conditions they were the first to confront. Javed noted that teams are now beginning to understand what to expect on these pitches, where even modest targets can be difficult to achieve or defend.
Reflecting on the pitches in New York, Florida, and Dallas, Javed remarked that while Dallas was perceived as more favorable for batting, the conditions still presented surprises for Sri Lanka and other teams alike. He emphasized the unexpected challenges faced by batsmen due to the unusual behavior of the pitches, prompting the need for teams to revise their strategies and undertake more thorough preparation ahead of matches, including their upcoming fixture against Nepal.
Looking ahead, Javed stressed the importance of adapting to these new conditions and suggested that teams will need to adjust their tactics accordingly. He anticipates a shift in how teams approach batting and bowling strategies to better cope with the unpredictable nature of the pitches seen in the tournament so far.
