Sri Lanka Surpasses Bangladesh for Most Embarrassing T20I Record After India Series Loss

Sri Lanka suffered a humiliating T20I series defeat at the hands of India, failing to win a single match and getting whitewashed by a young Indian side. This loss has led the Charith Asalanka-led team to an unwanted record: the most defeats in T20I history.

Sri Lanka Surpasses Bangladesh for Most Embarrassing T20I Record After India Series Loss

Including the Super Over, Sri Lanka has now lost 105 T20Is, surpassing Bangladesh’s 104 losses. Following them are the West Indies with 101 losses and Zimbabwe with 99 defeats.

Most losses in T20I history:

  • Sri Lanka: 105
  • Bangladesh: 104
  • West Indies: 101
  • Zimbabwe: 99

In the final match, Asalanka chose to bowl first, and the decision initially paid off as India struggled for runs, losing early wickets. However, middle-order contributions from Riyan Parag (26) and Washington Sundar (25) helped India reach 137/9.

In response, Sri Lanka had a strong start, with their openers adding 58 runs for the first wicket. But once the first wicket fell, the team crumbled, struggling to score. The match came down to the final over, with Sri Lanka needing 6 runs off 6 deliveries.

New Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav brought himself into the attack and took two crucial wickets, pushing the game to a Super Over. India won the Super Over with ease, sealing the series and adding to Sri Lanka’s record of most T20I losses.

This series highlighted both the resilience of the young Indian team and the ongoing struggles of Sri Lankan cricket in the T20 format.
