Ahead of India’s five-match T20I series against England, Axar Patel, the newly appointed vice-captain in T20Is, hinted at a flexible middle-order setup. The series, starting in Kolkata on Wednesday, will be followed by matches in Chennai, Rajkot, Pune, and Mumbai.

Axar, who has been used as a floater in recent years, has become a key asset in India’s batting lineup. His performance with the bat has improved significantly since 2023, with an average of 30.32 and a strike rate of 145.62, compared to 21.26 and 131.25 in 2022. His ability to bat in various positions—Nos. 3, 4, 6, and 7—has made him an important option for India, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat.

During the press conference, Axar revealed that the Indian team has a flexible approach, with players from Nos. 3 to 7 being ready to bat at any time, depending on the match situation. “Our middle order will bat based on the situation, match-ups, and what kind of bowlers are bowling,” Axar explained. He added that this strategy is not just for him, but for everyone in the middle order.

As Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in T20Is, Axar acknowledged the extra responsibility and the need for quick decision-making in the fast-paced format. He emphasized the importance of working closely with Suryakumar and the coaching staff to make informed decisions during the game.

Looking ahead, Axar noted the importance of building momentum, particularly with the T20 World Cup in 2026. India’s immediate focus is on the ODI format, but Axar stressed that the team is already looking ahead to the T20 World Cup and aims to carry forward the positive momentum from their recent successes.
