With more New Zealand players opting out of central contracts for T20 leagues overseas, Test captain Tim Southee hopes cricket boards and franchise leagues can collaborate to ease the club-versus-country dilemma. New Zealand has seen several top players, including Kane Williamson, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, and Adam Milne, choose T20 deals over central contracts from New Zealand Cricket (NZC).

Finn Allen recently joined Perth Scorchers on a two-year deal, while Devon Conway signed a casual contract, allowing him to play New Zealand’s nine Tests this season but missing some white-ball matches for the SA20 tournament.
Southee, speaking at the CEAT cricket rating awards in Mumbai, suggested that both international boards and franchise leagues need to work together. “Test cricket is still the pinnacle for many players,” he said. “It would be nice to see the boards and leagues collaborating because of the growing number of T20 leagues.”
Although Southee holds Test cricket close to his heart, he acknowledges the challenges posed by the rising popularity of T20 leagues. With New Zealand’s upcoming Test matches in Asia and back home against England, the current clash with T20 leagues may not impact player availability much this season. However, if more players continue to opt out of central contracts, NZC could face bigger issues in the future.
Southee is eager to play all Tests despite the subcontinent’s spin-friendly conditions, which may require a change in team balance. With five spinners in the squad, the management will select the best XI based on conditions, though Southee remains optimistic about his participation.
