South Africa vs. India: Historic Newlands Test Sees Tourists Clinch Victory in Just One and a Half Days

In a historic Test match at Newlands, India achieved a remarkable victory over South Africa by seven wickets in a mere day and a half, setting a new record for the shortest Test to produce a winner in cricket history.

Day One: South Africa’s Historic Collapse

The opening day witnessed a historic collapse by South Africa, as they were bowled out for a mere 55 runs. Despite Aiden Markram’s impressive century (106), the hosts were once again dismissed for 176 by the end of the second morning.

Day Two: Bumrah’s Brilliance and India’s Dominant Chase

Jasprit Bumrah’s exceptional bowling persisted into day two, securing five wickets and concluding with impressive figures of 6-61. India confidently chased down the 79-run target midway through the afternoon session, sealing a decisive victory.

Key Performances: Markram’s Century and Bumrah’s Heroics

Despite Aiden Markram’s resistance and seventh Test century, his efforts proved insufficient as he eventually fell to Mohammed Siraj, leading to South Africa being bowled out for 176. Bumrah’s exceptional bowling played a pivotal role in India’s dominant performance.

India’s Aggressive Chase: Jaiswal and Iyer Shine

After lunch, India aggressively commenced their chase, with Yashasvi Jaiswal adopting a T20 mode at the top of the order. Although he got dismissed for 28, the wickets of Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli did little to deter India, as Shreyas Iyer secured the win with powerful strokes, hitting a boundary off the last ball of the 12th over.

Historical Significance: Surpassing Records and Series Leveling

This historic Test has now surpassed the previous record, also involving South Africa, set in 1932 in Melbourne against Australia. Despite the disappointment for South Africa captain Dean Elgar in his 86th and final Test before retirement, India’s victory contrasts with their earlier loss in the Boxing Day Test at Centurion, ensuring that India has still never won a Test series in South Africa.
