Indian pacer Mohammed Siraj, known for his stellar performances over the past two years, did not make India’s squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Despite delivering brilliant numbers in the format, Siraj will now turn his focus to domestic cricket. The Hyderabad bowler will play in the Ranji Trophy for his home team in their final group game this season.

Siraj will represent Hyderabad against Vidarbha from January 30. However, he will skip the earlier match against Himachal Pradesh starting on January 23 to rest after the demanding Border-Gavaskar Trophy. A Hyderabad Cricket Association official, speaking anonymously, explained, “He has some workload concerns, so he won’t play the first game but will likely appear in the last match versus Vidarbha.”
India’s Champions Trophy campaign kicks off on February 20 against Bangladesh, followed by high-profile matches against Pakistan on February 23 and New Zealand on March 2.
Siraj, often regarded as a key bowling partner to Jasprit Bumrah, has been a vital figure in India’s success across all formats. However, his omission from the Champions Trophy squad, announced by captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajit Agarkar, has raised eyebrows. The decision to exclude Siraj was reportedly based on concerns over his effectiveness with the old ball. Instead, left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh has been chosen for the tournament.
This setback comes after Siraj’s impressive Asia Cup 2023 campaign, where he played a crucial role in India’s triumph. While missing the Champions Trophy is a blow, Siraj will aim to prove his mettle in domestic cricket and regain his place in the national squad.
