The ECB has suspended former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan from bowling in all their tournaments due to an illegal bowling action. The decision follows a report on Shakib’s action less than six weeks ago, marking the first such instance in his two-decade career. The 37-year-old, who has taken 1,247 wickets in 860 matches across all formats, now faces an independent reassessment to regain eligibility.
The ECB confirmed in a statement that Shakib cannot bowl in their competitions until he clears an independent re-assessment proving his bowling elbow’s extension remains within the 15-degree limit. Shakib underwent testing at Loughborough University earlier this month, with his suspension officially taking effect from December 10.
Shakib’s decision to resume his county career after 13 years has led to this setback. He played one match for Surrey against Somerset three months ago, where he took nine wickets in 63.2 overs but struggled with the bat, scoring just 12 and 0. Before Surrey, Shakib represented Worcestershire from 2010-11, taking 42 wickets across nine matches.
Despite the suspension, Shakib remains eligible to bowl in international cricket and other T20 leagues outside ECB jurisdiction. If he rectifies his action, he could return to ECB competitions like the County Championship, One-Day Cup, T20 Blast, and The Hundred.
Shakib’s immediate focus will be on correcting his bowling action to comply with regulations. While his suspension adds to recent challenges in his career, the southpaw still has opportunities to contribute in international cricket and other leagues while working toward regaining eligibility in England.
