The 2025 Champions Trophy has been clouded with controversy for the past year, mainly due to the ongoing dispute between India and Pakistan. India rejected traveling to Pakistan for the event and demanded a hybrid model, which the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) promptly rejected, leading to a standoff between the two nations.

Setback for Pakistan Before Champions Trophy as Hotel Fire Forces PCB to Cancel Tournament

As the tournament approaches, a serious incident has raised further concerns. A massive fire broke out at the hotel where several women cricketers were staying during the Women’s National Championship in Karachi. The PCB had booked a floor in the hotel for the five teams participating in the event. While most players were practicing at the National Stadium, five players were in their hotel rooms when the fire broke out. Fortunately, all players managed to escape unharmed.

The PCB immediately decided to cancel the ongoing tournament, citing safety concerns. The cancellation has cast a shadow over the Champions Trophy, raising questions about the PCB’s arrangements. The board confirmed that no players sustained injuries and evacuated them to safety. The PCB relocated the players to the Hanif Mohammad High-Performance Centre.

With just a few months left before the Champions Trophy, India has firmly stated it will not travel to Pakistan. The Indian government has not given approval, which has frustrated the PCB. They have demanded a written explanation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Meanwhile, the BCCI insists on a hybrid model, but PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi rejected the proposal, reaffirming that Pakistan will exclusively host the Champions Trophy.
