Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the head coach of Sri Lanka’s men’s cricket team until the conclusion of the 2026 T20 World Cup. Initially taking on the role in an interim capacity since early July, Jayasuriya’s impressive performance has led Sri Lanka Cricket to offer him the position full-time.

During his tenure, Sri Lanka achieved significant milestones, including their first bilateral ODI series victory against India in 27 years and a historic Test win against England on their home turf after a decade. Most recently, the team accomplished a remarkable 2-0 whitewash against New Zealand in home Tests, putting them in contention for the World Test Championship final.
Sri Lanka Cricket’s Executive Committee made this decision based on the team’s strong performances during tours against India, England, and New Zealand under Jayasuriya’s leadership as interim head coach.
This marks Jayasuriya’s first major coaching role. He has emphasized creating an environment that allows players to perform freely, a strategy that players have responded to positively, with many expressing admiration for his coaching style.
Before this role, Jayasuriya served as the chief selector for the Sri Lankan team during two separate stints. His first major assignment as head coach will be the upcoming limited-overs series against the West Indies, scheduled to take place in Dambulla and Pallekele. With his experience and recent successes, Jayasuriya aims to further develop the team as they look toward upcoming international challenges.
