In a 90-minute meeting held at a Manchester hotel last month, Rob Key, Brendon McCullum, and Ben Stokes advised James Anderson that the time had come for him to retire from international cricket. Anderson recently announced his retirement after England’s first Test against West Indies in July, and Key has shared insights into the decision-making process.
Key, who serves as the managing director of the England men’s teams, often conducts player appraisals and believed that meeting Anderson in person was crucial. “We felt it was necessary to sit down with Jimmy and discuss his future,” Key revealed in an interview with the BBC’s Test Match Special podcast.
The trio, consisting of Key, McCullum, and Stokes, convened with Anderson at a hotel near the station. “We had a conversation for about an hour and a half, led by Brendon,” Key explained. While Anderson may not have anticipated the discussion, Key noted that it wasn’t entirely unexpected.
According to Key, Anderson had already contemplated playing one final Test. “He was aware that the end was nearing, and we discussed various aspects, including his future post-retirement,” Key stated. “We didn’t pressure him to make an immediate decision, but not long ago, he determined that the Lord’s game would be his farewell.”
Key emphasized the need for England to transition towards the future. “We expressed that it’s time for us to move forward,” he said. “We’re at a stage where we must focus on the development of younger players, providing them with opportunities to learn and grow.”
While acknowledging the lack of experience in England’s bowling attack post-Anderson, Key expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of emerging talents seizing their chances. “It’s like following a comedian who’s just delivered a stellar performance… but it’s also an opportunity for someone else,” he remarked.

Looking ahead, Key mentioned potential contenders such as Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Matthew Potts, Josh Tongue, and Ollie Robinson. He also highlighted the importance of Robinson becoming more resilient, stressing that England has been clear about his need to enhance his consistency.
Moreover, upcoming fixtures will see the participation of Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes, offering additional opportunities for the evolution of England’s bowling lineup. Archer is gearing up for Sussex’s 2nd XI fixture against Kent as part of his T20 World Cup preparations, while Stokes may participate in Durham’s County Championship match against Lancashire.
