Rohit Sharma has been asked to share his future plans with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. India is set to complete its final ODI preparations with a three-match series against England before the tournament.
According to Times of India, the selectors are looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup and planning a transition for Test cricket. They aim to find a stable captain for both formats. While Virat Kohli’s Test form remains under scrutiny, his ODI performance is not a major concern.
Rohit’s Age a Key Factor
At 38, Rohit’s future with the Indian team remains uncertain, especially after a challenging Test season and limited ODI appearances since the 2023 World Cup. Reports suggest the BCCI has held discussions with him about his plans post-Champions Trophy.
“Bumrah’s chances of playing a full Test series or completing a season remain uncertain. The selectors may prefer a more stable option. Shubman Gill is seen as a leadership prospect, but his Test returns have been average. Rishabh Pant is a strong candidate, and Yashasvi Jaiswal could also be groomed for the role,” a source revealed.
India’s Leadership Transition
The team management is focusing on a smooth transition in both formats. Shubman Gill has been named vice-captain for the Champions Trophy, while Hardik Pandya is also in leadership discussions.
For Test captaincy, selectors may opt for a younger leader as Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness remains uncertain. With a long-term vision in mind, India could move beyond Rohit’s tenure, ensuring a stable leadership group for the upcoming World Test Championship and 2027 ODI World Cup.
