South Africa successfully chased down 172 runs, defeating Ireland by eight wickets in the first T20I at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. This victory marks the highest successful chase in Abu Dhabi and extends South Africa’s unbeaten record against Ireland. Although the match was officially hosted by Ireland, the South African team appeared more comfortable in the conditions, having recently played on similar dry pitches in Sharjah.

Ireland, batting first, set a total of 171 for 8. Curtis Campher anchored the innings with 49 runs, while Neil Rock contributed 37. South Africa’s bowling attack excelled, particularly Patrick Kruger, who took 4 wickets for just 27 runs, including a brilliant triple-wicket maiden in the final overs.
In response, South Africa’s openers Reeza Hendricks and Ryan Rickelton put on a strong performance, with Rickelton scoring a career-best 76 and Hendricks contributing 51. They formed South Africa’s third-highest T20I opening partnership, reaching 58 without loss during the powerplay. Rickelton’s explosive batting included back-to-back sixes, while Hendricks displayed his classic off-side shots, successfully navigating the chase.
Despite a few hiccups, including the loss of both openers, South Africa secured the win with 14 balls to spare. This match showcased the team’s resilience and adaptability, especially after their recent struggles in the format. With this victory, South Africa aims to build momentum in the T20 series against Ireland.
