In a significant move, the BCCI is likely to appoint Shubman Gill as India’s vice-captain in Test cricket. The stylish batter from Punjab recently succeeded Hardik Pandya as the vice-captain of the national side in white-ball formats.

While Suryakumar Yadav has been named India’s new T20I skipper, Rohit Sharma continues to lead the ODI and Test teams. A renowned journalist has claimed that Gill might also be appointed as India’s vice-captain for the upcoming Test series against Bangladesh. Currently, ace speedster Jasprit Bumrah serves as India’s vice-captain in Tests.
The journalist revealed this update in a video circulating on social media, where he shared his conversation with Gill. After leading India to a clinical 4-1 series win in the Zimbabwe T20Is, Gill earned the management’s trust as a capable leader. Ajit Agarkar, the head of the BCCI selection committee, praised Gill for his leadership qualities in a recent press conference.
Gill’s fitness and ability to perform in all three formats have strengthened his case for inclusion in India’s Test leadership group. This is why he edged out Hardik Pandya in the vice-captaincy race for ODIs and T20Is. However, the selectors will closely monitor Gill’s batting performance, as a lean patch could jeopardize his potential captaincy stint.
This strategic move, therefore, reflects the BCCI’s confidence in Gill’s leadership potential and, consequently, his bright future in Indian cricket.
