Pakistan’s campaign in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 ended on a disappointing note, marked by a narrow three-wicket victory over Ireland as their sole consolation. Losses to the USA and India in the group stage marred the team’s journey, resulting in their failure to advance to the Super Eights. Following their elimination, newly-appointed head coach Gary Kirsten reportedly sparked controversy by criticizing the team’s unity under captain Babar Azam.

Kirsten, renowned for leading India to World Cup victory in 2011, had joined Pakistan’s coaching staff shortly before the tournament. However, Pakistan’s performance fell short, winning only two out of four group matches against Canada and Ireland. Reports surfaced citing veteran Pakistani journalist Ihtisham Ul Haq, who quoted Kirsten’s concerns about internal disunity within the team, alleging a lack of support and cohesion among players.
The situation escalated when former President of Pakistan, Arif Alvi, reacted humorously but pointedly to Kirsten’s remarks, suggesting FIRs be filed against him and his name be placed on the Exit Control List (ECL). Alvi’s comments, though in jest, highlighted the sensitivity and scrutiny surrounding Kirsten’s critique of Pakistan’s cricketing environment.
In the aftermath of their World Cup exit, captain Babar Azam and five key players, including Mohammad Amir and Shadab Khan, opted to extend their stay in London rather than returning immediately to Pakistan. This decision, alongside Kirsten and assistant coach Azhar Mahmood’s granted leave to their home countries by the PCB, reflects a period of introspection and planning for the team amidst disappointing results and internal challenges.
The developments underscore a turbulent phase for Pakistan cricket, with attention now shifting to how the team and management will regroup and address the issues highlighted during their T20 World Cup campaign.
