Persistent drizzle meant no play was possible on the second day of the second Test between India and Bangladesh in Kanpur. The entire ground remained covered throughout the day. At times, three super soppers attempted to dry the field, but the ground staff could do little beyond that.
Light rain persisted until around 10 a.m., but it was too light for play to resume. However, significant rainfall the previous evening and overnight caused the most damage. With no chance of an immediate start, players returned to their hotel around 10:20 a.m. Eventually, umpires called off play at 2 p.m.
The first day was only slightly better, with a mix of rain and bad light allowing just 33 overs. Bangladesh managed to score 107 for 3 after India won the toss and opted to bowl, a rare decision for them at home. The last time India chose to bowl first in a home Test was nine years ago, against South Africa in Bengaluru, which was also disrupted by rain.
Bangladesh openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam initially survived the opening spells from Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. However, Akash Deep dismissed both soon after, putting India ahead. Mominul Haque and Najmul Hossain Shanto then stabilized the innings, but R. Ashwin broke their 51-run partnership by trapping Shanto lbw. Just as the match began to take shape, the weather once again intervened.
