The wait is finally over as the Champions Trophy 2025 kicks off on Wednesday, February 19, with hosts Pakistan facing New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi. Both teams, familiar opponents, will aim for a crucial win in the tournament opener.

New Zealand holds a psychological edge after recently defeating Pakistan in the tri-nation series. The Kiwis, who emerged as champions in that series, carry confidence into the Champions Trophy. However, they face a key concern with the injury status of their star all-rounder, Rachin Ravindra.
Ravindra suffered a head injury during the first match of the tri-series against Pakistan and was taken off the field as a precaution. He missed the remaining two games and remained under medical observation. With the tournament opener approaching, questions arose about his availability against Pakistan.
Fortunately for New Zealand, Ravindra’s participation now seems likely. He joined the team’s training sessions ahead of the match and looked in good rhythm. Ravindra also took part in the team’s photoshoot, with visible but healing wounds, raising hopes of his inclusion in the playing XI for the opener.
However, New Zealand suffered a setback with the loss of experienced pacer Lockie Ferguson, ruled out due to a foot injury. Kyle Jamieson, who has had his own injury struggles, replaces him in the squad.
The Kiwis face Pakistan first, followed by Bangladesh on February 24, and conclude their group stage campaign against India on March 2.
