The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) will appoint Shahid Aslam as the national men’s team’s new batting coach before their upcoming white-ball tour to Zimbabwe, according to a report on Tuesday. Aslam will take on the role following the team’s underwhelming performances, particularly in the T20I series against Australia, aiming to improve the batting unit. His role is likely to be permanent, following a recommendation from newly appointed interim head coach Aqib Javed for white-ball cricket.
Shahid Aslam has served in various roles within Pakistan’s support staff over the years and is now ready to take on this significant responsibility. His first major test will be the Zimbabwe tour, which includes three ODIs and three T20Is. Following this, Pakistan will face South Africa, making Aslam’s performance as batting coach crucial for the team’s upcoming challenges.
Pakistan’s batters struggled during their recent series against Australia, failing to make a significant impact. In the three-match ODI series, Usman Khan was the only bright spot, scoring 59 runs across three innings. In contrast, Babar Azam, the former captain, managed just 47 runs with a top score of 41 in the final ODI, where Pakistan lost by seven wickets, completing a 3-0 series sweep by Australia.
The upcoming Zimbabwe tour will serve as a critical test for Aslam’s influence on the team. The schedule includes three ODIs and three T20Is, with matches taking place in Bulawayo from November 24 to December 5. This series is seen as a crucial opportunity for Aslam to make his mark as batting coach.
