Less than a month after becoming the advisor to the PCB chairman on cricket affairs, Waqar Younis’s role has shifted. The former fast bowler and coach is now appointed as a mentor for one of the five teams in the new domestic competitions the PCB is launching this season. Waqar joins Misbah-ul-Haq, Shoaib Malik, Saqlain Mushtaq, and Sarfaraz Ahmed as mentors for these teams. Their first assignment will be the Champions One-Day Cup, scheduled from September 12 to 29 in Faisalabad. Sarfaraz, who is currently part of Pakistan’s Test squad for the Bangladesh series, will continue his playing career alongside his mentoring duties.

Initially, the PCB planned for Waqar to become the board’s cricket supremo, a new role designed to handle cricketing decisions and reduce the burden on PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi. However, the PCB has not clarified why Waqar’s role has changed. The new mentor position, described as a result of a “transparent and robust recruitment process,” seems to align more with his strengths in team-building and development. The advisor to the chairman position remains open for applications.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi expressed enthusiasm about the new mentors, highlighting their cricketing experience and passion. He believes their involvement will help identify and develop the next generation of cricketers, bridging the gap between domestic and international cricket and benefiting the Pakistan men’s cricket team.
