Despite strong opposition from India, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remains determined to host the entire ICC Men’s Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan. With tensions rising, the PCB appointed its Chief Operating Officer, Sumair Ahmad, as the tournament director for the prestigious event. This move comes ahead of the scheduled announcement for the tournament and signals PCB’s firm stance on hosting rights.
PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi made it clear that they would not compromise on the Champions Trophy 2025 hosting rights. While the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has proposed a hybrid model to the International Cricket Council (ICC), the PCB has demanded a written explanation from India regarding their concerns over security and potential withdrawal from the tournament. The dispute has put the ICC in a difficult position, as it cannot intervene if the Indian government denies permission for players to travel to Pakistan.
In response to the standoff, PCB announced Sumair Ahmad as the tournament director. PCB stated that the Champions Trophy 2025 would be hosted in Pakistan and that Ahmad would oversee the smooth execution of the event. Naqvi emphasized that the tournament would showcase Pakistan’s ability to host world-class cricket events, welcoming players and fans from around the globe to experience the country’s love for cricket and hospitality.
Amidst the escalating tensions, the ICC has reportedly issued a warning to the PCB, urging them not to make inflammatory statements about India’s involvement in the Champions Trophy 2025. Furthermore, the global cricket body is working diligently to ensure that the tournament proceeds smoothly and that all key teams participate without any disruptions. As a result, the ICC is striving to mediate between the two boards and maintain a neutral stance, ensuring the event remains a success despite the ongoing standoff.
