Dane Paterson’s three-wicket burst in an over and Marco Jansen’s impactful spells turned the tide for South Africa on the third morning of the Test at St George’s Park. Sri Lanka, resuming at 297 for 5, lost five wickets for just 37 runs but reduced South Africa’s lead to 40 by lunch. With only tailenders remaining, Sri Lanka managed to add 76 runs in the session, keeping the contest alive.

Paterson’s game-changing over began with Dhananjaya de Silva edging behind off the first ball. Kusal Mendis then misjudged a delivery that nipped back sharply and was bowled. Lahiru Kumara fell to a stunning catch by Jansen at gully, leaving Sri Lanka reeling at 298 for 8 from a comfortable 297 for 5.
South Africa had earlier struck with the older ball. Jansen bowled a fiery delivery to Angelo Mathews that kicked off the surface, forcing an edge to Kyle Verreynne. South Africa quickly took the second new ball, and it paid dividends immediately. Kamindu Mendis, dropped earlier by Tony de Zorzi, edged to slip soon after.
Kusal Mendis had a chaotic stay at the crease, surviving two dropped chances and multiple edges before Paterson’s brilliant delivery ended his innings. Despite the wickets tumbling, Sri Lanka showed resilience. Prabath Jayasuriya struck three elegant boundaries, steering Sri Lanka closer to South Africa’s total before the break.
With the pitch likely to deteriorate over the next two days, South Africa will look to capitalize on their narrow lead. Sri Lanka, despite their setbacks, will hope for a spirited fightback from their bowlers to keep the match competitive.
