Australia’s captain, Pat Cummins, will lead the ODI series against Pakistan, starting November 4 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head will miss the three-match series due to paternity leave. The squad, announced on Monday, includes 14 players, but Cameron Green has been ruled out for the summer after opting for back surgery.

Cummins aims to prepare for the upcoming five-Test series against India by focusing on ODIs. He plans to play a domestic one-day match for New South Wales on October 25. However, his participation in all three ODIs is uncertain due to the tight schedule and long travel between matches. Fast bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc are also in the squad, but rotation is expected as they seek Shield match experience.
Squad Focus and Strategic Planning
Chair of selectors George Bailey emphasized the importance of the ODI series against Pakistan. He stated, “This is our last ODI series before the Champions Trophy.” The squad balance is focused on both the tournament and individual Test preparations. The one-day side recently performed well in the UK. This series provides an opportunity to build on that success ahead of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan next February.
Marcus Stoinis makes his ODI return after not featuring since the 2023 World Cup. Despite not being selected for the ODI portion of the UK tour, he played in the T20I series against Scotland and England. Stoinis is close to qualifying for a contract upgrade and remains a key all-rounder option, particularly with Green’s injury.
New Opening Combination and Wicketkeeping Roles
Josh Inglis is the only wicketkeeper named in the squad, while in-form Alex Carey has been omitted despite strong performances against England. The absence of Head and Marsh opens up opportunities for a new opening partnership, with Matthew Short and Jake Fraser-McGurk likely to take on that role. Short was impressive during the UK tour, while Fraser-McGurk is expected to play in this series.
Cooper Connolly, who made his ODI debut during the England tour, is named in both the ODI and Australia A squads for four-day matches against India A, which overlap with the ODI series.
Upcoming T20I Series
Australia has yet to announce its T20I squad for the series against Pakistan following the ODIs, scheduled from November 14 to 18. None of the Test players, including Marsh, Head, and Cummins, will participate, as they prepare for the first Test against India starting November 22. This means Australia will require a new T20I captain, and the coaching staff will also change, with head coach Andrew McDonald and several assistants focusing on the Test series.
