Pakistan’s WTC Hopes Dented by South Africa Defeat and Over-Rate Penalty

Pakistan’s recent cricketing fortunes continue to spiral downward. Following a crushing 2-0 defeat in the Test series against South Africa, Pakistan suffered another blow. Slow over-rate in the second Test cost them 25% of their match fees and a crucial five-point deduction in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings.

After winning the ODI series against South Africa, Pakistan entered the Test series with high hopes. However, they faced a narrow defeat in the first Test, followed by a massive 10-wicket loss in the second. The WTC penalty added to their woes, as Pakistan came up five overs short even after time allowances. Captain Shan Masood accepted the charge issued by match officials Kumar Dharmasena, Nitin Menon, Alex Wharf, and Stephen Harris.

This isn’t the first time Pakistan has been penalized for slow over-rate in the ongoing WTC cycle. They lost two points against Australia in 2023 and six points during the Rawalpindi Test against Bangladesh in August 2024.

Pakistan’s crushing defeat in the second Test exposed their weaknesses. South Africa batted first and posted a mammoth 615 runs. Despite Mohammad Abbas’ six-wicket haul, the bowlers struggled to make an impact. In reply, Pakistan’s batting faltered, with Shan Masood standing out with a gritty 145. However, his efforts weren’t enough, as South Africa completed a dominant victory.

Pakistan’s WTC hopes are in jeopardy due to their over-rate issues and inconsistent performances. With key matches ahead, they need urgent solutions to bounce back in the WTC race.
