Jafer Chohan, the 22-year-old Yorkshire legspinner, will return home from England’s white-ball tour of the Caribbean to focus on his workload ahead of the Lions tour of South Africa. Chohan made history last month by becoming the first graduate of the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA) to be named in an England squad, but he has yet to make his international debut. Although he is part of the current squad, he will not play in the remaining T20Is. Instead, he will fly back as the team moves from Barbados to St Lucia, having already secured a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
Chohan’s release from the tour is a strategic decision by the team management, who want to ensure his readiness for upcoming commitments, including the Lions tour from November 20 to December 14. This will also mark Andrew Flintoff’s first stint as head coach of the Lions. Additionally, Chohan is set to play for the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League, starting December 15.
Chohan’s release highlights the depth of spin options available to England, with key players like Adil Rashid, Rehan Ahmed, and Liam Livingstone already in the squad. England’s successful white-ball series and the presence of several backup spinners have made it easier to manage Chohan’s workload.
Chohan’s rapid rise from playing National Counties cricket for Berkshire in 2022 to being called up to the England squad is an impressive feat. He credits the SACA for providing the opportunity to break into professional cricket, a path that has significantly shaped his career.
