Pakistan’s blind cricket team made history by claiming their first Blind T20 World Cup title in 2024. In a commanding performance in the final held in Multan on December 3, Pakistan secured a comprehensive 10-wicket victory over Bangladesh, marking the end of India’s dominance in the tournament.
Batting first, Bangladesh struggled against Pakistan’s disciplined bowling attack, managing only 139/7 in their 20 overs. Arif Hussain stood out for Bangladesh, scoring a fighting 54 off 52 balls. However, Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Babar Ali with two crucial wickets, kept the pressure on. Mohammad Salman and Matiullah also contributed with a wicket each, ensuring Bangladesh never found their footing.
Chasing 140, Pakistan’s openers, Nisar Ali and Mohammad Safdar, made the target appear effortless. Captain Nisar smashed an unbeaten 72 off just 31 balls, while Safdar supported him with an unbeaten 47. Their unbroken partnership of 141 runs secured the title for Pakistan in just 11 overs.
This victory is significant as it ends India’s stranglehold on the Blind T20 World Cup. India had won all three previous editions, beginning with their 2012 triumph over Pakistan. The 2017 and 2022 tournaments also concluded with Indian victories, leaving Pakistan as runners-up on multiple occasions. However, India’s withdrawal from the 2024 edition due to travel clearance issues gave Pakistan an opportunity to shine as hosts.
The rivalry between the two nations extends beyond this tournament. The Champions Trophy 2025, set to be hosted by Pakistan, has sparked a standoff as India seeks a neutral venue citing security concerns. While PCB has shown partial agreement to a hybrid model, they have tied it to additional demands, including a larger revenue share. The debate remains unresolved, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the two cricketing giants.
