Nicholas Pooran Overtakes Suryakumar Yadav for Most Sixes in T20Is

Nicholas Pooran put on a stellar performance for the West Indies in the first T20I against South Africa on August 23, 2024, at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. Coming in at No. 3, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter launched a powerful attack on the South African bowlers, scoring an unbeaten 65 off just 26 balls. His explosive innings, featuring two fours and seven towering sixes, was crucial in helping the West Indies chase down a target of 175 runs in just 17.5 overs. As a result, the Men in Maroon secured a seven-wicket victory, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Pooran’s extraordinary performance also boosted his position in the rankings for the most sixes in T20Is. By smashing seven sixes in the match, he increased his tally to 139 sixes in 96 T20Is, thereby moving up to third place on the all-time list. In doing so, he surpassed Glenn Maxwell, Suryakumar Yadav, and Jos Buttler. Currently, only New Zealand’s Martin Guptill, with 173 sixes, and India’s Rohit Sharma, with 205 sixes, are ahead of him. In fact, Rohit, who recently led India to victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup, holds the record for the most sixes in T20Is, making him the only player to hit over 200 sixes in this format.

Most Sixes in T20Is:

  • Rohit Sharma: 205 sixes in 159 T20Is
  • Martin Guptill: 173 sixes in 122 T20Is

  • Jos Buttler: 137 sixes in 124 T20Is
  • Suryakumar Yadav: 136 sixes in 71 T20Is

Beyond his T20I achievements, Pooran is also fifth on the list for the most sixes in all T20 matches, with 537 maximums in 352 games.

Pooran’s form is a significant advantage for the West Indies as they head into the second T20I against South Africa on Sunday, August 26, 2024, once again at the Brian Lara Stadium.
