New Zealand secured their seventh ICC final and fourth in the ODI format with a commanding 50-run victory over South Africa in the Champions Trophy semi-final in Lahore. Their record-breaking total of 362 for 6, the highest in Champions Trophy history, set up a title clash against India in Dubai.
Rachin Ravindra starred with his fifth ODI century, all in ICC events, while Kane Williamson notched up his third consecutive ton against South Africa. Their 164-run stand for the second wicket provided the foundation for New Zealand’s total. Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips added crucial late runs, with the latter smashing four consecutive fours off Marco Jansen.
New Zealand capitalized on South Africa’s struggles with the ball. Lungi Ngidi (3-72) was the standout, dismissing Will Young early and later Mitchell, but the rest of the attack lacked penetration. Kagiso Rabada (2-70) troubled Williamson early, bowling a maiden over, but failed to contain him later. Jansen and Keshav Maharaj went wicketless as New Zealand piled on 83 runs in the last six overs.
South Africa’s chase started poorly as Ryan Rickelton fell for 17, leaving captain Temba Bavuma struggling at 3 off 17 balls. He later found rhythm, reaching 50 in a partnership of 105 with Rassie van der Dussen. But Mitchell Santner (3-43) turned the game, removing Bavuma, van der Dussen, and Heinrich Klaasen.
With five wickets down, South Africa needed 170 off the last 15 overs. Despite David Miller’s unbeaten 100 off 67 balls, the task was insurmountable. He reached his century on the final ball, dedicating it to his infant son, but the knock felt hollow, echoing his World Cup semi-final heartbreak in 2023.
