Muzarabani’s Seven Wickets Shine on Zimbabwe’s Strong Opening Day

Zimbabwe ended the opening day in a strong position after Blessing Muzarabani’s sensational 7 for 58 dismantled Ireland in Bulawayo. Despite a shaky start at 31 for 5, Ireland recovered to post 260, thanks to a 127-run stand between Andy McBrine and Mark Adair. In response, Zimbabwe reached 72 for 1 at stumps, trailing by 188 runs.

Muzarabani exploited the unpredictable pitch early, removing four of Ireland’s top five. Peter Moor edged to slip after an awkward bounce, while Curtis Campher and Andy Balbirnie fell to deliveries that seamed away. Harry Tector’s leading edge to slip was followed by Paul Stirling’s dismissal, leaving Ireland reeling.

Lorcan Tucker provided resistance with a brisk 33 but fell chopping on to Trevor Gwandu. Adair then counterattacked, reaching a quick fifty and keeping the run rate near five per over. McBrine anchored the innings, adding crucial runs with the tail. Barry McCarthy gloved a bouncer, giving Muzarabani his sixth wicket before Ngarava bowled Matthew Humphreys, leaving McBrine stranded on 90.

Zimbabwe’s reply saw Ben Curran fall early, edging Barry McCarthy behind. However, Takudzwanashe Kaitano and Nick Welch played with patience, guiding Zimbabwe to stumps without further loss. Ireland tried aggressive field settings, but Zimbabwe’s batters capitalized, collecting crucial runs.

Adair nearly found Kaitano’s edge late in the day, but Zimbabwe ended unscathed. While Ireland fought back with the bat, Zimbabwe’s control with ball and bat ensured they had the upper hand going into day two.
