Morne Morkel Joins Team India as Rohit Sharma and Team Begin Practice in Chennai for Bangladesh Tests

On Friday, September 13, the BCCI shared glimpses of India’s practice session in Chennai ahead of their two-Test series against Bangladesh. The series begins at the Chepauk Stadium on September 19, with Rohit Sharma leading the team.

Recent developments include senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli arriving in Chennai. The upcoming series will mark Gautam Gambhir’s debut as India’s head coach for Test cricket. Gambhir received a boost with Morne Morkel joining the squad.

Gambhir, appointed as head coach in July, had initially struggled to secure his preferred support staff. Although he brought Abhishek Nayar and Ryan Ten Doeschate from KKR, Morkel was unavailable for the Sri Lanka series. As a result, Sairaj Bahutule served as interim bowling coach. India faced an unexpected ODI series defeat against Sri Lanka, their first bilateral loss to the island nation in 27 years. However, the BCCI announced Morkel’s appointment as India’s bowling coach in August 2024.

India will play their first Test in over six months, with Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul in the squad. Notably, Shreyas Iyer is absent from the team. The squad includes Rohit Sharma (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Sarfaraz Khan, Rishabh Pant (WK), Dhruv Jurel (WK), R Ashwin, R Jadeja, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohd. Siraj, Akash Deep, Jasprit Bumrah, and Yash Dayal.

India leads the World Test Championship standings, while Bangladesh is fourth, bolstered by a recent series win over Pakistan.
