Molineux set for comeback in ODI World Cup

Sophie Molineux is set to return from injury after being named in Australia’s 15-player squad for the Women’s ODI World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. The left-arm spinner, who underwent knee surgery late last year, has been progressing well in her recovery. While she may miss the ODI series against India before the tournament, team physio Kate Beerworth confirmed that she is on track to be available. Legspinner Georgia Wareham also makes her comeback after recovering from the injury that cut short her Hundred stint.

Molineux and Wareham will be key to Australia’s spin-heavy attack, which is expected to play a major role as they aim to defend the title won in 2022. The squad will be led by Alyssa Healy, who has returned strongly from her foot injury with a blistering 137* against India A last month. Selectors have also included Grace Harris, who despite limited ODI appearances since 2016, is seen as a powerful middle-order option, particularly in subcontinent conditions. Youngster Georgia Voll earns her first ODI World Cup call-up after an impressive debut season.

National selector Shawn Flegler highlighted Harris’ ability to change games quickly and praised the squad’s versatility to adapt to varying conditions across unfamiliar venues. Some grounds have never hosted women’s cricket, but Australia have drawn insights from the men’s team to prepare.

Uncapped players Nicole Faltum and Charli Knott will join the group for the India ODIs before returning home. With a blend of experience and fresh talent, the squad is confident of meeting the challenges of a long tournament in the subcontinent.

Australia will open their campaign against New Zealand in Indore on October 1.

Australia squad: Alyssa Healy (capt), Darcie Brown, Ashleigh Gardner, Kim Garth, Grace Harris, Alana King, Phoebe Litchfield, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Annabel Sutherland, Georgia Voll, Georgia Wareham.
