Mohammed Shami is gearing up for a long-awaited return to international cricket. The veteran pacer has been recovering from a right heel injury since the World Cup final in November 2023 and now looks set to feature in India’s upcoming white-ball series against England. Shami has been steadily working on his recovery and recently returned to competitive cricket in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, showing promising signs of form.

A Cricbuzz report states that Indian pacer Akash Deep will miss the England series due to a back injury. The injury will sideline him for at least a month, paving the way for Shami’s comeback. Deep, who impressed during recent Test matches, was seen as a strong contender for the T20I squad. His absence, combined with the expected rest for senior pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj, strengthens Shami’s case for selection.
Bumrah and Siraj bowled over 150 overs during the gruelling Border-Gavaskar Trophy, prompting India to rest them for major tournaments like the Champions Trophy. Shami’s return could fill the gap, especially with the selectors closely monitoring his performances in domestic cricket.
Shami recently played for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and will feature in their pre-quarterfinal clash against Haryana in Baroda. This match will be crucial for assessing his form and fitness ahead of the England series. The BCCI has taken a cautious approach to his recovery, with the National Cricket Academy’s medical team monitoring his progress.
The Indian selection committee will likely meet around the BCCI’s Annual General Meeting on January 12 to finalize squads for the England series and the Champions Trophy. Shami’s performances in domestic cricket could boost his chances of securing a spot in both squads.
