In match 39 of the ongoing T20 World Cup, New Zealand faced Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad. New Zealand’s pace bowler, Lockie Ferguson, achieved a historic milestone in T20 World Cup history by bowling four maiden overs in a single match, a feat never before accomplished in the tournament.
Ferguson’s exceptional performance began with a wicket off the first ball of the game, dismissing PNG captain Assad Vala for six runs. Throughout the match, Ferguson’s pace and variations posed significant challenges for the PNG batsmen, who struggled against his superior skills.
After the Powerplay, Ferguson maintained his dominance, delivering another maiden over to Sese Bau. He returned in the twelfth over and struck again, dismissing Charles Amini for 17. Ferguson concluded his spell with an extraordinary fourth maiden over, further enhancing his record-breaking achievement in T20 cricket.
This remarkable display by Ferguson also made him only the second bowler in T20 International history to bowl four maidens in a single match, following Saad Bin Zafar of Canada. Ferguson’s feat surpassed Zafar’s record by taking three wickets in his spell.
Ahead of their final T20 International match against PNG, New Zealand’s senior pacer Trent Boult announced his retirement from cricket after the World Cup. Despite Ferguson’s outstanding performance, New Zealand’s overall campaign in the tournament had been disappointing, with losses to Afghanistan and the West Indies leading to their early elimination from contention.
