Kumar Sangakkara, former Sri Lankan cricketer and Director of Cricket for Rajasthan Royals, commended India’s formidable 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2024, describing it as “extremely strong” and “well-balanced.”
Scheduled to kick off their campaign against Ireland on June 5, 2024, at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York, India’s lineup boasts depth and versatility. Sangakkara emphasized their robust batting lineup, supplemented by proficient all-rounders and a high-quality spin attack.
“India’s squad exhibits strength in various aspects. Their batting is solid, complemented by versatile all-rounders. Additionally, their spin department is of exceptional quality, providing them with multiple strategic options,” Sangakkara stated during a pre-match press conference ahead of Rajasthan Royals’ clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024.
Sangakkara highlighted the well rounded nature of the squad, underlining their historical prowess in international tournaments. Moreover, with meticulous planning from head coach Rahul Dravid and captain Rohit Sharma, Sangakkara anticipates India deploying diverse combinations tailored to match conditions and opposition strengths.
“Given their understanding of the conditions, I trust Rahul and Rohit to formulate strategies that align with India’s strengths. Whether prioritizing a formidable batting lineup or bolstering their bowling arsenal, India possesses the flexibility to adapt,” Sangakkara elaborated.
India’s squad includes two wicket keepers, Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson, alongside star batter Virat Kohli, currently in top form in IPL 2024. Additionally, Shubman Gill, Rinku Singh, Khaleel Ahmed, and Avesh Khan have been named as reserve players, offering further depth and options.
Placed in Group A alongside rivals Pakistan, Ireland, Canada, and co-hosts USA, India enters the T20 World Cup with a blend of experience, talent, and strategic depth, poised for a strong showing in the prestigious tournament.
