Star India cricketer Virat Kohli, a close friend of national football captain Sunil Chhetri, revealed that Chhetri informed him about his decision to retire before making the announcement public.
Sunil Chhetri, India’s most capped player with 150 matches and the country’s top goal-scorer with 94 goals. Announced on Thursday that he will retire after the game against Kuwait in Kolkata on June 6.
“He’s a really great player. He messaged me as well to inform me of his decision. I felt like he is at peace with it,” Kohli said in a video interview on his IPL team Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s X handle. “I have become very close with him over the years and I wish him the best. He is a lovely, lovely guy.”
Kohli also shared that his daughter Vamika has recently started swinging a bat but emphasized that he would never pressure his children to take up cricket.
Kohli and his-wife, actress Anushka Sharma, welcomed their daughter Vamika in 2021 and recently celebrated birth of their son, Akaay.
“My daughter picked up a bat and she is really enjoying swinging it. But it’s their choice, only,” he said.
“Currently, RCB is placed sixth in the IPL standings with 12 points from 13 games; consequently, they will face defending champions Chennai Super Kings in a must-win match in Bengaluru on Saturday.”
RCB made a remarkable comeback with five consecutive wins after enduring a six-game losing streak to stay in playoff race. The team struggled throughout April, spending most of the month at the bottom of the table, but turned their season around in May with five straight victories.
Kohli reflected on his mentality during April when the team was struggling.
“The month of May has been very good. In April, I thought we were going into a very dark place. We found a ray of sunlight in May. We are glad that we made the fans happy again,” Kohli said of their fightback.
