Kamindu’s Century and Kusal’s Fifty Put Sri Lanka in Control

Kamindu Mendis continued his impressive start to Test cricket by scoring his fourth Test century, with 114 runs off 173 balls. His innings was crucial in Sri Lanka’s effort on the opening day in Galle, despite New Zealand’s strong resistance. A couple of late wickets, including Kamindu’s dismissal, kept New Zealand in the game after an engaging day’s play.

Key Partnerships Boost Sri Lanka

Kamindu's Century and Kusal's Fifty Put Sri Lanka in Control

Kamindu’s century was built through two significant partnerships: 72 runs with Angelo Mathews and 103 with Kusal Mendis. While Kamindu was dominant, New Zealand’s bowlers made their mark. Will O’Rourke took three wickets, including both Sri Lankan openers early in the morning session. Glenn Phillips was effective with the spin, claiming 2 for 52, though Mitchell Santner went wicketless, largely due to bad luck.

Sri Lanka Battles Challenging Conditions

Sri Lanka had chosen to bat first on a surface with unusual grass cover, which made batting challenging. Despite this, Kamindu’s innings, along with Kusal’s 50 off 68, helped stabilize the Sri Lankan innings. Kamindu’s performance was notable for his adept use of footwork against the spinners, preventing them from settling into a rhythm. His partnership with Mathews was particularly important after Sri Lanka had fallen to 106 for 4. Although Mathews struggled to score quickly, his partnership with Kamindu provided a vital period of consolidation.

New Zealand’s Bowling Efforts

Kusal Mendis’s aggressive play added momentum to Sri Lanka’s innings until he was dismissed in an unexpected manner off a delivery from Phillips. Despite New Zealand’s efforts, including O’Rourke’s fiery spell and several crucial breakthroughs, Kamindu’s solid performance ensured that Sri Lanka ended the day in a strong position.

New Zealand’s Strong Start

New Zealand had started the day well, with O’Rourke’s pace causing trouble early on, but Kamindu’s resilience and skill allowed Sri Lanka to take control. Despite some moments of misfortune and sharp bowling from New Zealand, Kamindu’s century ensured that the hosts ended the day with a significant advantage.
