Jos Buttler admitted he will “consider all possibilities” regarding his future as England’s white-ball captain after their eight-run loss to Afghanistan ended their Champions Trophy campaign. It was England’s ninth defeat in ten white-ball matches this year.

Jos Buttler Uncertain About England Captaincy After Champions Trophy Exit

Buttler, who led England to the 2022 T20 World Cup title, has struggled since. England lost six of nine matches in the 2023 ODI World Cup, were thrashed by India in the 2024 T20 World Cup semi-final, and have now suffered back-to-back losses to Australia and Afghanistan in the Champions Trophy.

After England’s poor T20 World Cup run, Matthew Mott lost his job as head coach, and Buttler admitted he feared for his role at the time. Since then, England endured a tough tour of India, winning just once in eight games. Following the latest defeat, Buttler hinted his captaincy tenure could be nearing its end.

“I don’t want to make emotional statements, but you’ve got to consider all possibilities,” he told Sky Sports. “I enjoy captaincy, but losing results weigh heavy. You look in the mirror and ask, ‘Am I part of the problem or the solution?'”

Buttler acknowledged his future might not be his decision alone. “I’ll take time to assess what’s right, but the decision also lies with the top management,” he said.

England’s vice-captain Harry Brook led the team in ODIs last year, while Liam Livingstone and Phil Salt have also deputised. Their next white-ball series is against West Indies in June.

Buttler, who fell for 38 in England’s chase, has struggled for form in ODIs, averaging 22.00 since the 2023 World Cup. “At my best, I’m among the world’s top players, but I’m not performing at that level now,” he admitted.
