Afghanistan concluded their group stage in the T20 World Cup with a significant setback, suffering a heavy 104-run defeat to the West Indies. Despite their commendable achievement of qualifying for only their third knockout stage, navigating through the challenging “Group of Death” (Group C), their final match against the co-hosts ended on a disappointing note. This defeat, where they chased an imposing target of 217 and managed only 116 runs before being bowled out in the 17th over, stands as one of their largest margin losses in T20I history.

Jonathan Trott, Afghanistan’s head coach, reflected on areas for improvement, particularly highlighting the team’s bowling performance. He noted a challenging powerplay, specifically mentioning a chaotic fourth over that leaked 36 runs by Azmatullah Omarzai. Despite this setback, Trott acknowledged that the bowling unit tightened up between overs 6 and 15, conceding only 63 runs, demonstrating their ability to restrict scoring when executing their plans effectively.
“I think we could have bowled a little better at times, especially in the powerplay. However, we bowled well in the middle overs, restricting them effectively,” Trott commented, emphasizing the need for consistency throughout the innings.
Trott identified the critical need for Afghanistan’s bowlers to improve their damage-limitation skills, particularly under pressure in pivotal overs. He pointed out specific instances, such as the fourth and 18th overs against the West Indies, where lapses in execution allowed the opposition to seize momentum decisively.
Looking ahead to the Super 8s, Trott stressed the importance of starting each over strongly and maintaining composure under pressure. Addressing the team’s ability to recover from tough starts in overs will be crucial as they aim to bounce back from their final group stage defeat and make an impact in the next phase of the tournament.
