Afghanistan head coach Jonathan Trott believes no team will take Afghanistan lightly again after they knocked England out of the Champions Trophy. Ibrahim Zadran’s dominant 177 off 146 balls helped Afghanistan post 325 after winning the toss. The bowlers held their nerve as England threatened multiple times but fell short by eight runs.

This victory continues Afghanistan’s trend of upsetting top teams in ICC events. They defeated New Zealand and Australia in the 2024 T20 World Cup and comfortably beat England and Pakistan in the 2023 ODI World Cup. Trott believes these performances have permanently changed perceptions of Afghan cricket.
“In the past, teams may have thought Afghanistan was an easier opponent than historic Test nations. But now, every game will be competitive, and I expect to win,” Trott said. His immediate focus is on Afghanistan’s final group match against Australia, a must-win fixture.
“Since I took over, we’ve played Australia three times and were competitive in each. Tonight, the players should enjoy, but tomorrow, the focus is on Australia,” he added.
The Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore turned into Afghan territory as passionate fans filled the stands. Trott acknowledged the special atmosphere and hopes for another full house on Friday.
Trott also praised Zadran’s innings, calling it a display of immense quality. He highlighted Afghanistan’s growth, crediting franchise cricket for their players’ development. “They bring experience back to the national team, creating nights like this,” he said.
Despite this landmark win, Trott remains focused. Afghanistan must deliver again against Australia, where another strong display could make history once more.
