Since his Test cricket debut against India in 2012, Root has become England’s second-highest run-scorer, amassing 11,736 runs in 140 matches, solidifying his reputation as a prolific batsman for the national team.

Taking on the role of England’s captain in 2017 after succeeding Alastair Cook, Root played a pivotal role in leading England to victory in the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, emerging as the top scorer with 556 runs throughout the tournament.

Amid England’s recent setbacks in the T20 World Cup 2024, Root has voiced his steadfast support for Jos Buttler. Despite losses to Australia and a match being abandoned, Root remains optimistic about Buttler’s leadership, believing he is the right person to guide England to the knockout stages. Root expressed confidence that England will reverse their fortunes starting with their upcoming match against Oman.

When questioned about Buttler’s captaincy, Root emphatically defended his friend, stating, “Jos is one of my good friends. I think he’s a brilliant captain so I don’t think there’s any question. I think they’ll be absolutely fine, they’ve got a wonderful squad of players. They know exactly what they need to do.”

While Ben Stokes has assumed the captaincy of England’s Test team, Root continues to be an indispensable member of the England squad, contributing significantly across formats.
