Jay Shah Becomes ICC’s Youngest Chairman

Jay Shah has officially assumed the role of ICC Chairman, becoming the youngest-ever leader of the International Cricket Council at 36. Shah, who served as BCCI secretary for five years, is the fifth Indian to hold this prestigious position. His predecessors include Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, Shashank Manohar, and N Srinivasan. Jay Shah succeeded New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, who chose not to seek a third consecutive term. The ICC Board of Directors unanimously approved Shah’s appointment.

One of Shah’s immediate challenges as ICC Chairman is addressing the complexities of hosting the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has shown flexibility, expressing willingness to implement a hybrid hosting model proposed by the ICC. Under this arrangement, Pakistan will host select matches, and neutral venues like Dubai will accommodate India’s political concerns.

This stance marks a shift from the PCB’s earlier position, where it had threatened to withdraw from the tournament if full hosting rights were not granted. However, the PCB has proposed extending the hybrid model to all ICC events hosted in India until 2031. This would allow Pakistan teams to avoid traveling to India for tournaments, ensuring a balance between hosting rights and political sensitivities.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi called this approach a fair compromise, emphasizing the importance of promoting cricket while addressing national concerns. Jay Shah’s leadership will be pivotal in finding a solution that satisfies all parties and ensures the smooth organization of ICC events, particularly amidst political complexities. His tenure begins at a critical juncture for international cricket diplomacy.
