Janith Liyanage’s impressive 95 leads Sri Lanka to a hard-fought victory against Zimbabwe.

In a hard-fought encounter, Sri Lanka secured a two-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the second ODI of the three-match series in Colombo on Monday. Janith Liyanage’s resilient 95, amidst a challenging chase of 209, played a pivotal role as Sri Lanka encountered early troubles against Richard Ngarava’s formidable left-arm seam bowling. Ngarava claimed five wickets for 32 runs, establishing his career-best figures and unsettling the Sri Lankan top order. However, a crucial 56-run partnership for the seventh wicket between Maheesh Theekshana and Liyanage revived Sri Lanka’s innings.

Zimbabwe's batting collapse

Liyanage’s Valiant Knock and Theekshana’s Crucial Stand

Liyanage’s innings, featuring six fours and two sixes, ended just shy of a century, leaving Sri Lanka needing 37 runs with two wickets remaining. Despite the pressure, Jeffrey Vandersay (19) and Dushmantha Chameera (18) sealed the win with an unbroken 39-run stand for the ninth wicket.

Zimbabwe’s Batting Collapse and Ervine’s Resilience

Earlier, Zimbabwe, opting to bat after winning the toss, posted 209 runs, with skipper Craig Ervine top-scoring with 82. Sri Lanka’s Theekshana, Chameera, and Vandersay shared wickets, while a spectacular one-handed diving catch by Sadeera Samarawickrama dismissed Ervine. Zimbabwe’s batting collapse from 182 for four to 209 all out, losing the last six wickets for 26 runs.

Navigating Rain Delays and Raza’s Bowling Support

Despite more than an hour lost to rain during the Sri Lankan innings, the match continued without a reduction in overs. Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza supported Ngarava with two wickets for 32 runs in his 10 overs.

Ervine’s Acknowledgment and Series Outlook

Zimbabwe’s Ervine acknowledged it as a well-fought game and expressed pride in his bowlers. With Sri Lanka leading the series 1-0, the final game is scheduled for Thursday at the same venue, with inclement weather possibly affecting the outcome once again. Zimbabwe’s batting collapse serves as a critical moment in the match, shaping the narrative of the encounter.
