Ishan Kishan made a triumphant return to first-class cricket with a counterattacking 111 off 126 balls, leading India C to a strong position on the opening day of their Duleep Trophy match in Anantapur. Kishan’s innings, featuring 14 fours and 3 sixes, anchored India C’s batting as they reached 357 for 5 in 79 overs.
Originally not part of the revised squads announced by the BCCI on September 10, Kishan was a late addition, stepping in for India C after a dash from Bengaluru. He replaced an injured player and filled in for India D, the team he was initially set to play for. Kishan’s last-minute entry was a significant boost for India C, especially after missing the first round of matches due to a groin injury.
Kishan formed a crucial 189-run partnership for the third wicket with B Indrajith, who contributed a solid 78. This stand provided a strong foundation for India C’s innings. Kishan’s century, his seventh in first-class cricket, marks his return to red-ball cricket since his Test debut in the Caribbean in July 2023.
In addition to Kishan’s performance, India C benefitted from Ruturaj Gaikwad’s return. Despite retiring hurt early due to an ankle twist, Gaikwad came back to score 46 not out. B Sai Sudharsan and Rajat Patidar, who made 43 and 40 respectively, were unable to capitalize further.
Mukesh Kumar claimed three wickets for India D, while Navdeep Saini and Rahul Chahar took one each. Despite their efforts, Kishan’s impressive comeback strengthened India C’s dominant position.
