Umpires Inspect Bat Sizes During Sunday’s Double-Header Matches

A rare and unexpected moment unfolded during the IPL 2025 double-header on April 13, with umpires conducting bat size checks on the field. The incidents occurred during both the afternoon clash in Jaipur between Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bengaluru and the evening game in Delhi between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians.

Umpires Inspect Bat Sizes During Sunday's Double-Header MatchesIn Jaipur, on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Saidharshan Kumar were seen checking the bats of incoming batters such as Shimron Hetmyer, Nitish Rana, and Phil Salt. Later in Delhi, umpires Chris Gaffaney and Vinod Seshan conducted a similar check on Hardik Pandya’s bat as he entered the crease.

While bat checks are part of standard protocol, they are typically done off the field, usually in the dressing room before the start of play. However, on April 13, the bat inspections took place in full view of players, officials, and fans on the ground, making it a rare occurrence in IPL history. All bats inspected during the two matches passed the required standards.

The umpires used a bat gauge to measure the dimensions, ensuring compliance with official rules. According to these rules, a bat’s face cannot exceed 10.79 cm in width. The blade’s thickness must not go beyond 6.7 cm, and the edge must remain under 4 cm. The total length of the bat must not exceed 96.4 cm.

Though no irregularities were found, the on-field checks sparked curiosity and conversation among viewers and experts. Whether this marks the start of a more visible enforcement policy or was a one-off instance remains to be seen. For now, all players involved cleared the test, and the matches proceeded without interruption.
