In a major development, Virat Kohli appears ready to reclaim the captaincy of the Royal Challengers Bangalore for IPL 2025. According to a report by ESPN Cricinfo Chatters, the RCB legend has shown interest in taking up the leadership role for at least one season if the franchise doesn’t secure an alternative candidate. Kohli, who previously captained RCB from 2013 to 2021, may step in once again as the franchise looks to release current skipper Faf du Plessis.

RCB’s strategy for the upcoming IPL mega auction is clear: they aim to secure a suitable leader for the future. Top players like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer are set to enter the auction, intensifying this season’s bidding competition. If RCB successfully acquires one of these experienced candidates, Kohli may continue focusing on his role as a player. If RCB doesn’t secure one of these options, they plan to appoint Kohli as captain, relying on his seasoned guidance and deep commitment to lead the team.
Faf du Plessis, who captained RCB for three seasons, took the team to two playoff stages, showcasing strong performances. However, RCB is reportedly planning a leadership shift as they aim for a fresh start. Kohli’s deep loyalty to the franchise, dating back to the inaugural season in 2008, and his status as IPL’s all-time leading run-scorer make him an appealing candidate. His previous captaincy tenure included a memorable 2016 campaign when RCB reached the finals, only to fall short against SRH.
This season promises to be pivotal for RCB, with Kohli likely at the forefront if their search for a new captain proves challenging.
