In a captivating encounter in Hyderabad on Sunday, India encountered a setback, succumbing to a 28-run defeat against England in the first Test of the five-match series. Despite commendable performances from Ravichandran Ashwin and KS Bharat, Tom Hartley emerged as the hero for England with a stellar bowling display, securing figures of 7/62 in India’s run-chase.
On Day four, England resumed from their overnight score of 316/6, eventually posting a total of 420 in their second innings. This set India a challenging target of 231 runs to win within two days. The Indian run-chase began with Rohit Sharma (39) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (15), but Jaiswal fell to Hartley’s delivery in the 12th over. Shubman Gill, batting at number three, endured a two-ball duck, falling victim to Hartley as well.
The lack of substantial partnerships proved detrimental for India. Hartley continued to wreak havoc, dismissing skipper Rohit Sharma in the 18th over with an LBW decision that stood after a review. Despite efforts from KL Rahul and Axar Patel to stabilize the innings, Hartley’s brilliance persisted as he claimed his fourth wicket, catching and bowling Axar Patel in the 30th over. Joe Root added to India’s woes by dismissing KL Rahul LBW in the 33rd over, leaving India at 107/5.
In the 39th over, Ben Stokes showcased exceptional fielding skills, running out Ravindra Jadeja with a precise throw from mid-on. England’s comprehensive victory in this closely contested match grants them a 1-0 lead in the five-match Test series.
