BBL Considers New Rules That Could Change Cricket

Cricket Australia (CA) is considering several innovative rule changes for the Big Bash League (BBL) to increase excitement and fan engagement. These proposals could significantly alter the traditional nature of the sport. The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Cricket Australia is discussing four major rule changes for BBL 15, including a double play run-out that could dismiss two batsmen in a single delivery.

BBL Considers New Rules That Could Change Cricket

Here are the proposed changes:

  1. Designated Batter and Fielder: Teams may name a designated batter and fielder before the toss. The designated batter would only bat, while the fielder would take the field during the bowling innings. This rule could increase participation from international players by reducing their workload, particularly for batters who won’t need to field.
  2. Double Play Run-Outs: This rule would allow teams to dismiss two batters on a single ball through run-outs at both ends, potentially creating a dramatic moment in matches.
  3. Maiden Overs: Under this proposal, if a batter faces a maiden over, they could be dismissed. Additionally, a bowler who delivers a maiden over could bowl a fifth over in the same innings, extending their contribution to the team.
  4. Reduction in End Changes: Inspired by The Hundred, this rule would allow teams to bowl two consecutive overs from the same end. It would speed up the game, making BBL matches shorter and more time-efficient.

While these changes could shake up the game, CA will need to decide how long they want to stick with these innovations, given their mixed success with previous changes.
