Gautam Gambhir is India’s new head coach, taking over from Rahul Dravid after India’s victory in the T20 World Cup 2024. BCCI secretary Jay Shah announced this on X (formerly Twitter). Gautam Gambhir, expressing his honor, stated, “India is my identity and serving my country has been the greatest privilege of my life.” His tenure begins with a white-ball tour of Sri Lanka featuring three ODIs and three T20Is later this month.

The BCCI confirmed the end of assistant coaches Vikram Rathour, Paras Mhambrey, and T Dilip’s tenures, thanking them for their contributions under Dravid. Gautam Gambhir, aged 42, takes charge amidst India’s recent success in international cricket, although the team is transitioning post the retirements of key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja from T20Is.
Having mentored Kolkata Knight Riders to an IPL title in 2024, Gautam Gambhir emerged as the frontrunner after discussions during the IPL season. His coaching career includes stints with Lucknow Super Giants and a celebrated playing career highlighted by crucial roles in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup victories.
The BCCI’s search for a new head coach concluded with Gambhir’s appointment for a three-and-a-half-year term, overseeing all formats until December 2027. His ambition, as articulated in Abu Dhabi, is to guide India towards further success on the global stage, relying on the support of millions of cricket enthusiasts nationwide.
