India requests a red soil pitch for the 1st Test in Chennai, surprising Bangladesh, reports say

India and Bangladesh will face off in the first Test at M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, in just five days. In a surprising development, reports indicate that the curators will prepare the pitch using red soil, instead of the traditional black soil surface typically used at Chepauk. Black soil pitches, known for their slow nature and early assistance to spinners, typically have higher clay content, resulting in lower bounce. In contrast, red soil pitches provide more bounce in the early days and crack up later, bringing spinners into play as the match progresses.

India’s request for a red soil pitch is seen as a tactical move to reduce Bangladesh’s familiarity with black soil tracks. Red soil surfaces, which aid pacers initially and spinners as cracks develop, could tilt the advantage away from Bangladesh, who are more accustomed to black soil conditions.

The Indian team, led by Rohit Sharma and joined by Virat Kohli, has already begun preparations for the two-match Test series, with their first practice session held under the guidance of Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff. Morne Morkel, India’s newly appointed bowling coach, has also joined the squad ahead of the first Test. The match kicks off on September 19 in Chennai.
