Hardik and Arshdeep shine as India take 1-0 lead against South Africa

India delivered a powerful all-round performance to crush South Africa by 101 runs in the opening game of their ten-match build-up to the home T20 World Cup. Even after losing the toss and being asked to bat on a tricky, damp pitch, India turned what could have been a setback into a statement win.

The start wasn’t ideal for India. The pitch was sticky, the ball held up, and batting looked tough. Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav both fell early to Lungi Ngidi, and India’s plan of using three left-handers in the middle order didn’t work as hoped. Abhishek Sharma, Tilak Varma and Axar Patel found it difficult to score freely against South Africa’s tall, pace-heavy bowling attack. By the 12th over, India were struggling at 78 for 4 and a below-par total looked likely.

But Hardik Pandya completely changed the game. Walking in under pressure, he smashed 59 not out off just 28 balls—an innings full of confidence and timing. He attacked Keshav Maharaj with two no-look sixes, handled the pace of Anrich Nortje, and ensured India finished strongly. Thanks to Hardik’s late burst, India reached 175 for 6, giving their bowlers a competitive total to defend.

With some early movement available, Arshdeep Singh got India the perfect start. He dismissed Quinton de Kock for a duck with a brilliant delivery, then removed Tristan Stubbs using wobble seam. His early strikes put South Africa under pressure right away.

India’s spinners then took control. Axar Patel bowled Aiden Markram, Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Donovan Ferreira and Marco Jansen with clever variations, and Hardik added the wicket of David Miller. The wickets kept falling regularly, and South Africa never built any momentum.

Jasprit Bumrah wrapped up the innings and crossed 100 T20I wickets, becoming only the fifth bowler ever to achieve 100 wickets in all three international formats. South Africa were bowled out for just 74, their lowest T20I total.
