The prestigious ICC Champions Trophy is gearing up for a grand return to Pakistan in February and March of 2025. This marks a historic moment, as Pakistan will be the sole host of the ICC tournament for the first time since the heartbreaking attack on the Sri Lanka national team in 2009. Prior to this, the last major ICC tournament held in Pakistan was the 1996 Cricket World Cup, which they co-hosted with India and Sri Lanka.
To ensure a smooth and secure tournament, an ICC delegation arrived in Pakistan on Monday, March 25th. Led by Senior Manager Sarah Edgar and Manager Aoun Zaidi, the delegation began inspections at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi. Their itinerary also includes visits to Lahore and Rawalpindi to assess the preparedness of all three stadiums designated for the Champions Trophy. Security, a top priority, prompts the delegation to meet with law enforcement agencies to discuss and finalize necessary measures.
Pakistan Cricket Board Secures Hosting Rights
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially received the hosting rights for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in December 2023. The agreement signing ceremony took place at the ICC headquarters in Dubai, UAE, between former PCB Management Committee Chairman Zaka Ashraf and ICC General Counsel Jonathan Hall.
As the host nation, Pakistan has secured automatic qualification for the tournament. They will be joined by the seven highest-ranked teams from the group stage of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. It’s noteworthy that former champions Sri Lanka will not be participating in the Champions Trophy for the first time, having fallen short of qualification due to their performance in the recent ODI World Cup.
The tournament will follow the same format as previous editions, featuring two groups of four teams each. The top two teams from each group will then progress to the exciting semi-final stage, ultimately leading up to the highly anticipated championship match.
