In a positive development for Australia ahead of the Ashes, fast bowler Josh Hazlewood returned to the nets on Tuesday as he continues recovering from the hamstring injury that ruled him out of the opening Test in Perth. He trained at Cricket Central in Sydney using a red ball, indicating his focus is on returning for the Adelaide Test, which will be played during the day this year. While Hazlewood is unlikely to feature in the second Test at the Gabba, head coach Andrew McDonald expressed confidence that he will be available later in the series, stating that the team expects him to contribute at some stage.

Meanwhile, Pat Cummins also returned to training and was seen bowling with a pink ball, reflecting Australia’s preparations for the upcoming day-night Test in Brisbane. Having made promising progress in recent weeks, Cummins impressed in the nets before the opening Test. However, selectors will only confirm his return once they are sure he can handle the physical demands of a full Test match. McDonald highlighted that while Cummins looked strong, the focus now is on ensuring his body can withstand extended workloads without risk.
With the first three Tests well spaced out, recovery time is in Australia’s favour, though a tighter schedule awaits from Adelaide onwards. The pink-ball Test at the Gabba could be another fast-paced contest, as seen in a recent Sheffield Shield match where ten wickets fell in one night session. Rising pacer Xavier Bartlett’s strong performance has drawn attention, while Michael Neser remains a backup option. Jhye Richardson is also being monitored as he builds fitness following shoulder surgery.
